Ruminants are even-toed herbivores that graze or browse and get their nutrients by fermenting their food. This is made possible by their multiple-chambered stomachs and the ability to chew cud. Their multiple stomach compartments are commonly known as rumen, reticulum, omasum, and abomasum.
What Is Rumination in Animals?
Rumination is the process whereby ruminants swallow their food and later regurgitate it to chew again, commonly known as chewing cud. This is done strictly by ruminants, facilitated by their specialized digestive system, which enables it. The steps of rumination include regurgitation, chewing cud, salivation, and finally, swallowing.
Are Horses Ruminant Animals?
Despite being regular grazers or browsers and having the ability to digest cellulose, horses are categorized as non-ruminants. Contrary to what ruminants have, horses are monogastric creatures; they have only one stomach chamber. Other monogastric creatures include humans, chickens, pigs, rabbits, dogs, and cats. The horses’ large intestines do the same thing the rumen does for ruminant animals.

The giraffe is the tallest animal on land. It uses its long neck to reach the high points of trees. Their unique body patterns allow them to camouflage safely with the grassland habitats they live in. The okapi, who are also from the giraffe family, are ruminants.
Goat-Antelope Family
Most of the goat-antelope family members are ruminants. They include mountain goats, muskox, ibex, and the chamois.

What Are Pseudo-ruminants
Pseudo-ruminants are herbivores with the same adaptations as the true ruminants in their stomach to digest the fibrous plant material. However, they usually have three compartments in the stomach instead of four. Pseudo-ruminants, like elephants, have similar digestion processes as ruminants, such as ingesting and fermenting plant material and cud chewing. However, they are not categorized as true ruminants.
