Canis mesomelas

The Black-Backed Jackal is a small animal that is very similar to a fox. They are approximately 12 ½ inches tall. They weigh around 15 and 25 pounds depending on their habitat. The Black-Backed Jackal may be tan or reddish but they almost always have black coloring on the backside. This allows them to blend in well to their surroundings.

They will occupy dens that other types of animals have abandoned. The Black-Backed Jackal hunts at night and they will feed on small types of prey such as crickets, spiders, and insects. They also consume fruits and nuts that may be seasonal to the habitat of the Black-Backed Jackal.
