Manatee
Facts about Manatees
Manatees are pacific aquatic mammals which belong to the order Sirenia as the
Dugong.
Manatees are believed to have
evolved from land mammals being their closest relative the elephants.
Manatees are herbivores and spend
most of their time in shallow waters eating plants like mangrove leaves, algae and turtle grass.
They eat up to 50 Kg. per day.
There are three types of manatees
living today, the West Indian Manatee, the Amazon Manatee and the African
Manatee.
Any of these species live in
ware, shallow, coastal waters and cannot survive to colder waters. During winter they look to move
into warm rivers if the place they live gets cold.
