Flamingo Facts
Flamingos are wading birds, widely known because their characteristic pink
plumage.
The best known species of
flamingos are the Greater Flamingo which is largely widespread on Africa and some parts of Asia and
the American Flamingo known in the Caribbean and Galapagos islands.
Flamingos feed on brine shrimp,
filtering them out of water.
There is controversy about why
flamingos are pink. The traditional theory states that they get their pink color from the beta
carotene in their diet got from brine shrimp and algae.
Flamingos are known to stand on
one leg, although this behavior is not fully understood. Some scientists think that they have the
ability like some other animals to put to sleep only half of their body.
